As internet blogging and amateur journalism rapidly increase, many are questioning if the traditional image of the journalist still exists and what the future holds for them. The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) has come under hot debate as to whether it is now more important than ever before or an elitist, prehistoric union.

Last year, long-time journalist and media specialist Professor Roy Greenslade controversially quit the NUJ, outraged at its perception of the internet as a threat to journalism. In October 2007, Prof Greenslade announced on his Guardian blog that the NUJ "cannot possibly adapt to meet the revolutionary demands of a new technology".
